Each year, children in elementary school districts across San Antonio have an opportunity to submit drawings related to the parade theme. An independent panel of judges selects a winner and runner ups from each city council district. All the finalists’ schools receive cash awards for their art departments. The overall winning design is awarded the awarded the Margaret Casillas Grand Prize Artist Award and featured on the River Parade program cover. The artist rides on a float in the parade.
